How It Works
This PNG to WebP converter uses the HTML5 Canvas API to transform your PNG images into WebP format directly in your browser. The tool renders the image onto a canvas and exports it as a WebP file using the specified quality level.
WebP is a modern image format created by Google that provides superior compression compared to both PNG and JPEG. At equivalent visual quality, WebP files are typically 25-34% smaller than PNG files, making it ideal for web use where loading speed matters.
The quality slider controls the compression level from 1% to 100%. Lower values produce smaller files with more visible compression artifacts, while higher values maintain better quality at larger file sizes. A setting of 75-85% works well for most images.
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency (alpha channel). Your PNG transparency is preserved in the WebP output. All conversion happens locally in your browser -- no images are uploaded to any server.
